What causes cavities?
Posted on December 17, 2021 by Ross Perry
Bacteria cause cavities.
And not all bacteria — just a few species in your dental plaque which become too abundant and produce lots of destructive chemicals which harm your teeth.
One of these bacteria is shown below. It is called Streptococcus mutans, a nasty bug which can jump into your blood stream and which is implicated in heart disease and stroke.
So, cavities = bacteria = risks of heart disease and stroke.
Time for a good chat with your hygienist.
