PREVORA ANTIBACTERIAL TOOTH COATING: chlorhexidine acetate

 Patient Selection

Your patients with the following risk indicators may benefit from Prevora treatment:

  • Gum recession.1 A patient with gum recession is four times as likely to experience root caries as one without. About half of Canadian dental patients report their dentist or dental professional has said they have gum recession.
  • Daily medication use, particularly anti-hypertensive medications,2 3 diuretics,4 anti-anxiety agents,5 anti-depressants6,7 or a combination of many medications which dry out the mouth8. Patients taking a combination of blood pressure and psychiatric medications had an annualized root caries increment more than double those not taking these medications.9 Surveys show that one in three seniors in Canada take 3 or more prescription drugs on a daily basis.10
  • A high level of infection, particularly by Streptococcus mutans or Lactobaccilus.11
  • Periodontal disease including gingivitis, which exposes the tooth roots.12
  • Recurrent decay.
  • Age is the overriding risk factor: a rule of thumb is your chance of root caries is "your age less 20%."13
