Prevora is a new preventive treatment which has been under development for many years. The science behind Prevora encompasses these five fundamentals:
- Root caries is a very common, chronic disease influenced primarily by advancing age and associated gum recession, multiple-medication-use and dry mouth.
- Root caries emerges from the dental biofilm, a web of up to half a billion bacteria with limited susceptibility to chemical attack.

- Scientific studies, including those of Prevora, have shown that topical applications of chlorhexidine can be significantly effective in reducing dental caries when it is dosed at high concentration and frequently. Infrequent, low-dosing of chlorhexidine is ineffective as is topical fluoride for root caries.
- Preventive services are more effectively administered by the dental office as patient compliance to prevention of chronic, asymptomatic diseases such as caries, is poor.
- Scientific studies are connecting adult caries, and particularly root caries, to overall health. It is becoming apparent that root caries may no longer be a nuisance disease but rather a marker for an overall decline in health.
