PREVORA ANTIBACTERIAL TOOTH COATING: chlorhexidine acetate

 Comparing Preventive Treatments for Adults

The National Institutes of Health37 and British dental researchers38 have concluded that there are no preventive treatments currently administered to adult patients which meet the highest (Type 1) standard of evidence.

The treatment effect of the current standard of care (in-office fluoride gel, in-office fluoride varnish, at-home extra-strength fluoride toothpaste or chlorhexidine rinse prescribed by the dentist) is uncertain and without clear documentation, particularly in older dental patients.39 Fluoride varnish proved ineffective in preventing root caries in patients undergoing periodontal maintenance care. Regular monthly use of 0.12% chlorhexidine mouth rinse did not significantly reduce dental caries in older adults.40

Prevora offers several advantages over the 0.12% chlorhexidine mouth rinse in preventing dental caries:

  • Prevora is approved for preventing root caries - the mouth rinse is indicated for gingivitis. There are no studies indicating that the mouth rinse is effective in reducing dental caries.
  • Prevora requires little in patient compliance and does not stain.
  • Prevora generates new and recurring revenue for the hygiene team.
